In 1790 the Peacock family built Frith Manor on the north-west edge of Finchley Common, but it was to be a further 60 years before a race meeting was held in the grounds of the Manor. The meeting took place on Thursday 28th March 1850 on a one mile course which started in front of the grandstand. The first fence was a bank and hedge, followed by a series of hurdles and hedges, with 32 fences on each circuit. The Frith Sweepstakes was won by Recruit from The Unlucky One. However, the feature race, the Free Handicap Steeplechase for which there were 17 runners, was won by Mr Anson’s Johhny Oaks. Despite the obvious success of the races no further meetings were staged. |
